- In 1820 all of our nation’s states, except for Louisiana, lay east of the Mississippi River. To the west, stretched two vast tracts of U.S. territory. Further west still lay a southwest region governed by Spain, while in the northwest, Oregon Country was claimed by both the United States and Britain. Over all these lands, which were still occupied by American Indian populations, American settlers began moving west.
