- American women who worked to support abolition gained new perspectives on questions of liberty and women’s rights. As women fought to win freedom for enslaved African Americans, they began to question the limits and restrictions that society imposed on their own lives.

- One of the great transformations brought about by the Second Great Awakening was a greater role for women in religious and public life. More women began speaking out on matters of faith and assuming public roles in social reform movements. The resistance to this trend only increased women’s determination to gain more rights.
