By the mid-1800s, many Americans recognized that slavery was a moral injustice, especially in a nation striving for liberty and equality. However, those fighting to abolish slavery faced fierce opposition and many challenges.

- Although some enslaved African Americans were forced to cope with their bondage, others ran away or fought back. Meanwhile, outrage over slavery fed a growing Abolition movement dedicated to destroying slavery forever. This in turn provoked a backlash from slavery supporters and increased tensions between the Southern slave states and the free states of the North.
