Topic 3: The American Revolution
Overview:
Great Britain fought against the French (and the Native Americans in North America) during the Seven Years War. After the war, King George III and Parliament increased taxes on the colonists to help pay off Britain's war debt. Many colonists thought this was unfair since they had no representation in Parliament, but England insisted on these taxes, since they fought the war to protect the land where the colonists lived. The increasing taxes led to protests, boycotts of British goods, and many of violent uprisings, until a number of representatives from each colony met in Philadelphia and decided to declare independence from Great Britain. The colonists knew that they would be David against Britain's Goliath army, but they had the determination (and a great commander in George Washington) to break free from what they considered to be the tyranny of the king. Just how did the Americans manage to use the few advantages they had over the British to win the war and begin the greatest political experiment of all time?
