topic 5: The early republic
Overview:
The new nation established many precedents and traditions under George Washington presidency. Political parties, known as the Federalists and the Republicans, formed once the Founding Fathers began debating the role and scope of the federal government. Tensions grew between the parties and between the North and South. Later, despite the many important roles John Adams played in the formation of the United States, as the second president, a number of his policies made his party, the Federalists, increasingly unpopular. While Jefferson was president, he greatly expanded the nation's land by purchasing the Louisiana Territory from France. He sent Lewis and Clark on their famous expedition across the country to explore America's new landscape. During James Madison's presidency the country had to prove its worth again, during the War of 1812 against Britain, a war that can also be considered America's second war for independence. Soon after, the country's first Industrial Revolution greatly transformed America's economy and the lives of its people. An increasing sense of nationalism and what was known as Manifest Destiny during James Monroe and John Quincy Adams's presidencies grew the American identity. Lastly, Andrew Jackson, as the seventh president, greatly expanded the electorate and oversaw many negative changes in the lives of Native Americans.
